The word Ayurveda is derived from Sanskrit which means 'science of life'. The history of Ayurveda can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization and the Rig Vedic period. It is a collection of medical knowledge discovered by many saints and medical practitioners over a vast period of time. Ayurvedic medicine or treatment system originated in the Indian subcontinent and has spread widely to other parts of the world. Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita are the original and important texts related to Ayurveda. Ayurvedic medicine is the preferred method of medicine for most of the Indian population and about 85 percent of the Indian population uses it in some form or the other. The Ministry of AYUSH was established by the Government of India, whose primary responsibility is to support Ayurvedic traditions with recent scientific research and to promote this system of medicine as an alternative to Western medicine.
In Ayurveda, there are three main factors responsible for the health of any person, Pitta, Kapha and Vata. If these three elements are fully present in the human body, then the body remains healthy and functions smoothly, whereas the deficiency or increase of any one of these three factors gives rise to diseases. To make Ayurvedic medicines, naturally occurring products are used which contain medicinal plants as base ingredients. The procedures for making medicines and treating patients are well defined and there are many universities and ashrams that provide treatment and education in Ayurveda. Ayurveda has definitely been successful in providing good health and good lifestyle to Indians. In India, it is common to see plants like Neem or Tulsi in almost all the traditional Hindu homes and they are used as medicinal plants. And this plant in turn helps in prevention of many types of diseases and also strengthens the immune system.
